Stats: Health

Whether you are conscious and fighting a battle or incapacitated is based entirely on your personal health as represented by your hit point statistic (HP). This number represents your level of health and whether or not you are conscious. It cannot rise higher than your maximum hit point statistic (MAXHP) -- which is governed by your character's level, skills, and other considerations.

Rests

While adventurers are out adventuring, they shift between combat and amity states as the adventure requires. However, at any time the party can decide to take a rest -- a literally break in the action where the game master simulates the passage of time. During this time, the players heal (see below) and may be given a minor impromptu battle by the GM.

Timed Regeneration

During a rest period, each character regains 5% of their hp for each hour of rest. Resting does not cure poisoning implicitly.

Certain creatures, gear, and weapons have the ability to regenerate health over time. This healing occurs every turn when in combat, every 10 minutes in amity, and simultaneously as any timed degeneration calculations. Healing regeneration occurs after any timed degeneration that is active -- thus allowing a poison effect to render you unconscious BEFORE the regeneration kicks in.

Special note: health regeneration is ALWAYS applied after any degeneration damage you are taking.

Timed Degeneration

Certain creatures, gear, and weapons have the ability to inflict poison damage. This damage occurs every turn when in combat, every 10 minutes in amity, and simultaneously as any regeneration calculations. This damage can, in some cases, persist after battle until the poisoned character is healed with either a potion, NPC, or magical spell that cures poison.

Special note: degeneration damage is ALWAYS applied before the health regeneration you may be entitled to.

Incapacitation

When your hit point level drops below 1, you are incapacitated. This means that you have lost consciousness and cannot:

  • participate while in combat
  • interact while in amity.
  • use a health pack
  • cast a spell
  • walk under your own power (you can be carried or placed in a vehicle)

To regain consciousness, you must regenerate enough hit points to return above "0". This can happen:

  • by a member of your group healing you with spells
  • by a member of your group healing you with potions
  • by the effects of a magic artifact
  • by enemies that accidentally heal you in some way
  • by previously cast magical spells that cause HP regeneration

While incapacitated, your character's body continues to take damage from negative area effects such as explosions or magic and also suffer from timed debuffs such as poisoning. As the battle continues, this damage will send your hit points further and further into the negative making it harder for your to regain consciousness.

Death

There are only three ways for a character to die:

  1. A character is so far into the negative that he or she decides they would prefer not to continue and declare themselves dead
  2. A character is so far into the negative that the game master declares them dead
  3. All characters in a party become simultaneously incapacitated and there is not enough health regeneration in effect to bring all of them back resulting in a total party kill (TPK)

In the event all characters are incapacitated and there is enough HP regeneration to bring at least one of them back, the game master may calculate how much time needs to elapse and then award or reduce the appropriate amount of HP to all the players in the party to simulate the passage of time.

Returning to Town

Upon completing a quest, the adventurers as a group can decide to return to town. This will trigger a town event where players are able to buy property, begin relationships, etc. After this one-time refresh, any damage sustained as a result of conducting business in town remains when the characters begin their next adventure.

On entering town, any character who is not incapacitated is instantly granted 100% of their maximum hit points. Any incapacitated player remains at their HP level. They can be healed -- as always -- using potions or other medical means. However, even after they regain consciousness, they are not granted the full regeneration.

While the adventurers are welcome to leave and return to town as often as they wish, the 100% regeneration buff is granted only once when returning to town immediately after the completion of a quest as determined by the game master.
