Elemental Affinity: Fire

One of the magical affinities that are used by characters bearing wands and magical weapons is the elemental affinity called "fire". The fire affinity allows for the production of heat, flame, and light.

Overview

You can use your imagination and knowledge of science to invent new and interesting ways that "fire" may work, but for the most part you can break down this affinity into the following uses:

  • Heat - You could produce warmth during cold nights or to melt frozen objects
  • Burning - You could injure or push back smaller enemies with pulsating waves of heat
  • Fire - You could light campfires/candles or set objects and enemies ablaze
  • Illumination - You could brighten or add light to dark areas allowing for better vision
  • Reaction - You could melt a metal or create a chemical change, such as making something brittle

Weapon Buffs and Debuffs

When used in a weapon, fire can injure or kill foes in both melee and ranged combat.

  • Buff: Burning - a creature hit with a burning weapon take additional fire damage
  • Buff: Radiance - this weapon illuminates the immediate area with a blinding flash on hit
  • Debuff: Water Resistance - water-based creatures resist some percentage of the damage caused by a fire weapon
  • Debuff: Air Resistance - air-based creatures resist some percentage of the damage caused by a fire weapon

Armor Buffs and Debuffs

When used in a armor, fire can create a damaging aura that injures nearby melee enemies.

  • Buff: Burning - nearby enemies take additional fire damage
  • Buff: Radiance - illuminates dark areas

Example Combinations

By themselves, the power of magical affinities can be used for smaller attacks and effects. However, by combining multiple affinities during an invocation you can create very interesting ways to solve a problem or defeat a foe. It's important to know that the following examples are in no way intended to limit the wide variety of combinations you can create, they are simply examples. Consult with your game master to see if two affinities can work together in the way you intend.

  • plus "Air" - Fire full of air could create a rolling ball of flame while air full of fire could produce a snake-like flame elemental
  • plus "Electricity" - Fire full of electricity could create a burning cage while electricity full of fire could create a spectral chandelier that drips fire from the ceiling
  • plus "Fire" - you cannot combine an affinity with itself
  • plus "Earth" - Fire full of earth could be used to construct a statue or building while earth full of fire could hurl a flaming rock at your enemy
  • plus "Water" - Fire full of water could activate a steam engine while water full of fire could steam a window so you can write a slowly evaporating message
  • plus "Athletics" - Fire full of athletics could create distracting fireworks while athletics full of fire could leave burning footprints behind you for trailing allies to follow

  • plus "Demand" - Fire full of demand could be used to drag a flint across the floor setting fire at a distance from a powder keg while demand full of fire could burn an NPC that resists your attempts at mind control
  • plus "Obedience" - Fire full of obedience could produce a flaming vine to preoccupy enemies while obedience full of fire could summon or take control of a fire elemental
