Character Exemplar Titles

Every player character is known as an adventurer -- a person of impressive prowess who is willing to go out on grand quests. But how does an adventurer distinguish him- or herself from the hundreds of other adventurers that live in the world?

Earning an Exemplar Title

In Entwined, characters can earn titles by succeeding in a handful of prerequisite actions, returning to town, and then bragging about their exploits to someone of authority or a crowd of gathered peasants. If they succeed in impressing the NPC in question, the game master may have that NPC award the character an exemplar title. On receipt of the title, the character is immediately granted several bonuses.

Bragging

As characters go out on these grand adventures, players should remember -- or even write down on scratch pads -- some of the neat stuff they do out in the world. One of the actions a character can take while in town is "brag" which can be done from either a braggarts platform -- a small stage surrounded by adoring locals -- or to various high-ranking officials who are in the mood to hear from you, such as:

  • King
  • Duke
  • Governor
  • Senator
  • The Council
  • Sheriff
  • Title Merchant
  • Ship Captain
  • Appointed Scribe

Bonuses

As you brag about your accomplishments, you can one-by-one check them off from a list of required accomplishments. Upon completion of a full list, you will then obtain the following rewards:

  • The right to use the exemplar title
  • If it's a tier 2 title, one (1) stat dice modifier
  • A unique piece of magical jewelry
  • A unique item designed by the game master
  • In some cases, the game master may give out a side quest

Titles grant a character some or all of the following privileges:

  • the respect of NPCs that admire that title
  • the right to enter certain restricted buildings
  • the ability to accept and turn in bounties
  • the ability to craft improved items
  • access to the black market
  • access to contacts who can provide information, jobs, or shops
  • access to hidden side quests

Each title comes with a single piece of magical jewelry -- either a ring or a necklace. This jewelry is permanently tied to the person who earned it. When the jewelry is worn by someone who has earned the title, it glows blue; when worn by an impostor, it glows bright red and radiates an unpleasant burning sensation.

Jewelry does not count as armor, so you can wear it immediately if you so chose without having to shift around your inventory.

Tier 1 Titles

The first step to greatness is to achieve a tier 1 title. These are actually quite simple -- requiring only 3-4 rather simple achievements to get the ball rolling.

  • Craftsperson
  • Diplomat
  • Entertainer
  • Explorer
  • Healer
  • Scholar
  • Spiritualist
  • Thief
  • Thug

Tier 2 Titles

After achieving the prerequisite Tier 1 exemplar title (shown in parentheses), you can then continue onto a lengthier list of more difficult achievements to earn a more grandiose Tier 2 title.

  • Chef (Craftsman)
  • Inventor (Craftsman)
  • Smith (Craftsman)
  • Spymaster (Diplomat)
  • Politician (Diplomat)
  • Negotiator (Diplomat)
  • Actor (Entertainer)
  • Geisha (Entertainer)
  • Musician (Entertainer)
  • Painter (Entertainer)
  • Writer (Entertainer)
  • Archaeologist (Explorer)
  • Climber (Explorer)
  • Sailor (Explorer)
  • Battle Medic (Healer)
  • Doctor (Healer)
  • Poisoner (Healer)
  • Specialist (Healer)
  • Surgeon (Healer)
  • Magician (Scholar)
  • Mathematician (Scholar)
  • Scientist (Scholar)
  • Historian (Scholar)
  • Monk (Spiritualist)
  • Oracle (Spiritualist)
  • Priest (Spiritualist)
  • Shaman (Spiritualist)
  • Con Man (Thief)
  • Embezzler (Thief)
  • Master Thief (Thief)
  • Assassin (Thug)
  • Bomber (Thug)

Organizational Titles

In some games, the game master may have an organization (such as the military) give out unique exemplar titles as part of the plot. For instance, if characters participated in the victorious Great Battle of Emorda, each of the characters in the party may be granted the title "Defenders of Emorda".

Challenging a Title

At any time, a character may attempt to sway an NPC by using their exemplar title. However, if the character is not wearing his or her identifying jewelry (for instance, they were just in stealth and put it in their pocket), then the NPC may challenge them to prove their title.

If the identifying jewelry that comes with the title is stolen from or otherwise misplaced by a character, that character retains his or her title but probably won't be able to use it because they have no way to prove that they are who they say they are until they get the jewelry back. Obviously this doesn't apply with NPCs who remember meeting the character previously.

Loss of a Title

At any time, a character can abandon a title by throwing away or destroying his or her identifying jewelry.

However, a title may also be stripped from a character by a high-ranking NPC if that character a) offends the official, b) offends a large portion of the town, or c) acts in some way that conflicts with the nature of the title. For instance, if a "historian" goes around repeating false histories of the province or a "surgeon" kills too many of his patients then there may be a call for a revocation of the title.
